Foundations

Inclusive writing

Write for all of Nigeria — every region, faith, age, gender and level of income — without stereotype or assumption.

Names#

Nigerian names come from hundreds of naming traditions. Never validate names against an English-centric pattern; allow long names, short names, hyphens, apostrophes and single names.

Gender#

  • When gender is unknown, use "they".
  • Ask for gender only when you genuinely need it, explain why, and include options beyond male/female where the regulatory context allows.

Religion and culture#

  • Don't assume holidays. "Season's greetings" lands differently in Kano and in Enugu.
  • Avoid idioms tied to one culture when writing for all of Nigeria.

Age and digital literacy#

Avoid copy that assumes app fluency ("just toggle it in settings"). Spell out the path: "Go to Settings, then Notifications."
